Types of comedy
Introduction:-
The word comedy is generally used
for a kind of play which ends happily. A
genuine comedy his the atmosphere of mirth with sparkling fun though out
the play comedy have been written since time in memorial among ancient Aristophanes,
Plautus and Terrance were the masters who’s comedy In spite many followers
meander , Moliere, Shakespeare and Ben Johnson are the modern master of comedy.
According the
different technique and things employed by the comedy writers, comedy’s can be
divided in to following types
1) Classical Comedy:-
A classical comedy
is rule bound its models are the classical writer like Plautus, Terrence and
Aristophanes .The most important rules are
1) Observation three
unity time, place and action
2) Thoroughly comic
spirit
3) Realism: - its
deals with the every familiar life of ordinary people.
4) Its aim is
correctly and satiric.
Some human falling weakness or social vices are exposed and ridicule
.The most prominent writer of this type is Ben Johnson in Elizabethan age.
2) Romantic Comedy:-
The Shakespearean
comedy is romantic in spite and construction it grew out of national taste and
does not bother about the rules of composition .There is no mingling the comic
and tragic character and incidence. For example “ A midsummer night Dream”.
By Shakespeare
or satiric but innocent , good natured laughter , follies are not doubt exposed
and ridicule but laughter is gentle and sympathetic and there is no moral induction
be laugh with people and not add that in Shakespearean comedies. There is intervention supernatural
characters like Titian, Oberon in “ A Midnight Summer Dream” .the locale is
also sometimes imaginary the “ Forest of Arden”.
3) The Comedy of Humorous:-
Ben Johnson comedy ,
Classical comedy, Realistic and satirical is also called comedy of humorous in
this comedy each character is representation of some “ Humor”i.e.Some master
passions which governess all is action the characters are type the locale familiar
the purpose of the writer is to satirize the follies and foibles the weakness
and vices contemporary society. The satire is generally varied brutal.
4) Comedy of Manner:-
In the restoration age
there flourished a new genre of comedy called “ Comedy of Manner” .The comedy of manner reflects the culture of the upper
classes in which manner are supreme.It deals with the gallantries introduce and
a affection of fashionable men and women it plot is made of love introduce.
It’s dialogue and scene are sometimes in moral and incident .This type of
comedy became more popular due to its witty dialogue .This dialogue the
background of this comedy is generally London. Parks, streets, fashionable
ladies drawing room of coffee shop house. Wycherley and Etherege were the
pioneer in the hand of Congreve.
5) Farce:-
Farce is low kind of
comedy which seek provide various laughter by the use of absurd character and
situation and dialogues .It is characterizes by exaggerations and extra defenses
and there is much in it that is nearly noncence.Many comedy writer have
introduce this farcical elements in their comedy to Cather the amusement to the groundings.
6) Tragic comedy and Dark comedy:-
In search comedy Tragic or
serious problem are presented in the begging but it ends happily.So there is
double ending. The ending is happily for some character and unhappy for others.
Serious aspect of begging create gloom in the comedy of search comedy sometime
deals with the gave problem of morality like Shakespeare “Measure for Measure”.
The problem here is ; What is more important purity of soul or body other Examples from modern drama
can be of Samuel Beckett’s “ Waiting for Godot” and Harold Pinter “ The Birthday
party”.
