A Real good smile
A Real
good smile a story written by Bill Naughton. The story is about a boy namely Billy
.The parents of Billy wanted him to go and work as apprentice in the
locomotive shed. Billy knew that it was not good job to start with but his
parents said the job had good future for Billy if he get the job .He would
start as dirt wiper and is few years he would become a greaser.Billy did not
want to accept this job but in those days anyone who had a job in locomotive
shed was practically regarded as being royalty.
Alf- Agar who was
next door neighbor new one man called Tom Petty .Tom petty knew Mr. Bidwell
who was the boss of the Loco. Alf Agar was hoping to peculate tom to speak for Billy
but the problem was Mr. Bidwell was like a head master a tuff man not the sort
of man you could easily approach.
Alf inform Billy that
everything has been fixed up but “ Mr. Bidwell will not give a job to
any led that has been spoken for”. Mr. Bidwell is strictly against any kind of
influences and he believes that every lad should be able to speak up for him
and therefore Billy has to go to Mr. Bidwell and ask for the job for him.
Billy was very confused because this was the first time
that he was going to give interview and therefore he was very nervous and did
not know how to behavior or act in front of boss of the company .Alf explain Billy
what he had to do get a job from Mr. Bidwell .He told Billy not to put his
hands in his pocket while giving interview to Mr. Bidwell always have your solder
well back and he never like a person who is mumbling instead he likes a person
with loud and clear voice and besides that there is one thing that Mr. Bidwell
always want and that is ‘ A real good smile’ because he cannot bear the site of
any sad looking lad if Mr. Bidwell show Billy looking miserable and sad. He
would never give Billy a job there for. He always wants to have a boy with a
real good smile if you do not have this god smile than you never give you job.
“No matter how you when in other respect”.
The reason behind this was Mr.Bidwell
does not like the idea that those who work under him are not happy at their
work after hearing the instruction of Alf Agar. The father of Billy shouted and
said to Billy
“You better get it stuck in your
mind and keep it there”.
Alf suggest the parents
of Billy .He should better rehearse in all this instruction Billy ask his
father what they wanted Billy to do his father replied “Smile”. They instructed
Billy to rehearse how to behave and how to smile when he faces Mr. Bidwell though
out the we can Billy rehearse how to behave and tried out different smiles
after along we can finally came Monday when Billy was supposed to meet Mr.
Bidwell.
Billy was very nervous
and he continues to his rehearsal on his way to office of Mr. Bidwell when he went
into the office he wish the person sitting on the chair good morning and ask
that man
He had come there to get a
job. He thought that the person is impressed with the behavior of Billy and he
acted exactly the way he was instructed to do by Alf Agar but soon he come to
know that he man sitting on the chair was not Mr. Bidwell but he was a Sweeper
.
When Billy
came to know the reality of that man all his energy had gone and he become very
nervous and soon he heard the whimpering of sweeper saying here is Mr. Bidwell
now when Billy finally met Mr. Bidwell. He started mumbling and his hands went
in to pocket. He asks Mr.Bidwell in very weak voice. The reason for his arrival
and told him that if he want any lad for the locomotive shed but Mr. Bidwell
said he did not want and laid and he would not take any person like Billy at
any post but soon somehow Billy gathered his courage and replied in a very strong
voice to Mr. Bidwell thou he did not like the way his spoke to Mr. Bidwell as
he said
‘ I would not have your job at any prize’ and soon he went
out to the office and he knew that after
bearing such behavior of Billy . Mr. Bidwell would never take Billy in locomotive
shed.
But in the evening Alf Agar went out Billy’s
house and inform Billy that Mr. Bidwell wants Billy to start at the locomotive
shed from tomorrow morning when Billy heard that he could not believe but Alf
Agar told him that Mr. Bidwell like the way Billy spoke to him and he felt that
Billy was an honest lad and he really admired his honesty.
Thus Billy got
the job not by the help of the influence of any person but by the help of his
honesty more than that as one proverbs suggest
“ The Eye are windows to the soul”
and
“ The face is the index of the mind .”
Mr. Bidwell shows honesty in the eyes of Billy and innocence in his behavior because Billy did not pretend and therefore where ever you go “Be yourself”. Billy never spoke about the honesty that he had yet just by the expression of the spark that Billy had in his eyes was recognized by Mr. Bidwell.
