                       The story of the novel starts with the present time and flashback. The narrator gives year vice description and narration .He use artistic language in his novel. Here we can say that the story of the novel is related with Jhampa lahiri’s own life experience because Jhumpa Lahiri’s is having in U.S.A and her rooted in Indian. The Jhampa Lahiri’s is Diaspora writer. The diasporic and homesickness to both of similar to both of Jhampa and Ashima.

                           In this novel we see that the characters swing between two cultures. The identity of the very characters has suffered. the narrator give well narration of  father and son relationship and give minute description of Indian Bengali tradition in all ways like Rice Ceremony, Marriage function ,Death occasion and party celebration. Ashima prefers to wears a sari in America also. She is very strike of her culture and the importance of being Bengali or an Indian. The narrator clearly narrated the generation gap.

       Ashore experience of accident during the Journey from Calcutta to Jamshedpur. Ashima reminiscences of marriage and meeting with Ashoke after they got marriage .so here we can the novel swing between present time and flashback. Ashima give the birth of the child name Gogol.

                    The description of the alienation which is marvelously narrated in the character of Ashima. Jhampa Lahiri’s show deep knowledge of English poet like William Wordsworth and the Russian Authors like Nikolai Gogol.Its show vast reading of various literature and her fond of reading. she give detailed description of the character especially Ashoke , Ashima, Indian culture ,Bengali Cuture,American Culture, Nikhil and Gogol ,Sonia ,Maxinie,Mashooomi Mazoomdar.He , the past affairs of Nikhil and Maushoomi.

                         The novel is well build and harmony of sequences. This novel into parts like rising action, climax but there is no falling action as the remains interesting till the end. The title of the novel is to the content and apt to the tittle.this novel is separated journey of the characters. In this novel we see that identity crisis of the characters like Ashima, Gogol and Ashoke and we see the next generation characters like Gogol, Ruth, Maxine, Kim they present American Culture.
